Lots for Tots was invited to see Derby Theatre's Christmas Production of Hansel & Gretel, so I took along my 7 year old daughter and mother. I have to say I was completely blown away by this production from start to finish. I'd not read any of the press releases so didn't really know what to expect but what a feast for the eyes!
The show opens with the comical rooks who appear throughout the show providing humour, music and unintended mischief on their travels. It was bright, lively and full of welcome surprises...especially the sweets thrown out to the audience 😊
The glorious set brings to life the fairy tale world of the Hansel & Gretel story with the woods being a dominant focus and the Gingerbread House which literally looks good enough to eat! Lovable Hansel who can't resist a sugary treat we learn, and Gretel his quick thinking witty sister set out to teach their parents a lesson but things of course, don't go to plan!
There are surprise appearances from Goldilocks, The 3 Bears and Little Red Riding Hood which provides more comedy and cleverly ties in other fairy tales. The stand out character has to be the Witch. Providing the perfect balance between comedy and fear this character is genius! I had thought before the show that the whole idea of a child eating witch may leave the little ones with a head full of nightmares but the approach taken certainly means this isn't the case. The story telling is perfectly intermingled with humour, music or a dance interludes that has the children bobbing along to.
Whilst not a traditional Christmas affair, this production will give you all the warm feelings needed to get in the festive mood with songs you will be singing on the way home, and providing you with great watch for all the family to experience together. It's one I would definitely recommend!
My daughter's review (7) "I loved it, it was really really good. I couldn't choose my favourite bit, I liked it all and the witch was funny".
